Recommended Reading for Parents of Young Readers

Recently, I’ve written a lot about how to help your child improve their reading.

Today, rather than sharing with you my ideas and advice, I want to recommend a book.

It’s called Overcoming Dyslexia by Sally Shaywitz, M.D.

If your child does not have dyslexia, don’t be discouraged by the title. Personally, I think the publisher made a mistake using that title. Yes, the book is about how to overcome dyslexia, but more accurately, it’s about how to improve reading skills.

I consider Dr. Shaywitz a mentor, even though I never met her.

Overcoming Dyslexia heavily influenced the design of Reading Buddy Software and many of the articles I’ve posted on this blog are user-friendly synopses of Dr. Shaywitz’s research. But if you want to see the research, if you want to review the nuts and bolts behind the conclusions, check out Overcoming Dyslexia.

Here’s an excerpt that directly addresses children’s reading:

“When the National Reading Panel analyzed almost a hundred research articles on teaching fluency, they made an important discovery: The programs that work most effectively and produce the largest gains share three key features: (1) a focus on a child’s oral reading, (2) opportunities for practice, allowing a child to read and to reread words aloud in connected text, and (3) ongoing feedback as a child reads. Reading aloud makes feedback possible. Silent reading does not. The feedback component is essential because it allows a child to modify his pronunciation of a specific word and simultaneously correct the stored neural model of that word so that it increasingly reflects the exact pronunciation and spelling of the word.”

Like I said, Dr. Shaywitz is a mentor, and her research had a huge impact on the protocol embedded in Reading Buddy Software and on my writings.

Another book worth reading is The Fluent Reader. It gets into the nuts of bolts of fluency, as explained in my free e-report 7 Secrets to Transform Your Child’s Reading.

If you hired (or plan to hire) a reading tutor for your child, these books will ensure that you’re an educated consumer and that you can responsibly manage the parent-tutor relationship and make sure the work your tutor is doing with your child is on-target.

If you’re taking the “do-it-yourself” approach, these books will help you appreciate on a much deeper level what you’re trying to accomplish with your child and how you should go about it.

If you’re using (or plan to use) Reading Buddy Software, well, you’ll see why Reading Buddy Software was designed as it is and why it can help your child upgrade their reading level.

When I got Reading Buddy Software for my son, it was like I got a 24/7 reading tutor. Better though, because I didn’t have to pay by the hour.
