How to Motivate Your Child to Read

BY ARI FERTEL

How do you motivate your child to read?

If practice leads to improvement, how do you motivate your child to practice?

In his landmark research in 1986, Albert Bandura shows that competency breeds motivation. In other words, if we’re good at something we’re motivated to do it.

That makes sense because it feels good to be good and what feels good we’ll do over and over again.

Furthermore, when we’re good at something we get social rewards (attention and compliments, for example). This social feedback also feels good, which motivates further involvement.

The question is: how do you give a child a sense of mastery with reading? How do you make sure that when your child reads he feels good about it?

The answer is: repeated reading.

Repeated reading means reading the same passage multiple times.

If you want your child to be motivated to read, they should not be going from article to article or paging through a book. Instead, they should take a body of content and read it (and listen to a fluent reading of it) at least 4 times in a row.

The repetition leads to mastery, which breeds confidence, which motivates more reading.

Repetition > Mastery > Confidence > Motivation

If your child is constantly breaking his teeth on new text, he might get frustrated and move on to an activity that feels better.

But nothing feels better than success. So when your child repeats a reading and masters it, they get hits of dopamine which motivates more of the same activity.

As it turns out, repeated reading not only increases motivation; it’s the key to improving a child’s reading skills. To understand why that’s the case, check out my article…

When I got Reading Buddy Software for my son, it was like I got a 24/7 reading tutor. Better though, because I didn’t have to pay by the hour.
